Hathway: Routers

Submitted by insanity rules on 3 November, 2005 - 18:46

hi i've taken hathways broadband and i found out about the routers later. now hathway doesn't provide them anymore. does anyone know which routers hathway previously used?? thanks

Forums:

I am not entirely sure what brand of routers they offer currently, but they used to use Zyxels previously. I can give them a call and ask if you like.. They were still offering router options here in Chennai as of 2 months ago.

The rental and refund prices mentioned on the hathway page (as I found out later) have also gone up. So it's not really terribly cost effective at present either.

ok i'll check it out. here in mumbai they've stopped providing router. dunno y. and they aren't informing which routers they used to use too. i'll check out Zyxels now.

btw why exactly do you need one? How many PCs do you have? There might be better/cheaper solutions for you to try..

jus 2 comps. any cheaper soln i'm ready 2 hear mate. jus as long as it work perfectly for me. plus i wanna be able to set ports for some of my softwares like skype and all.

I see. Well,

Easiest and cheapest method: Assuming you have PCs A and B, and A is connected to the Hathway modem using a network card (called for e.g. NIC N1). You will need to add another network card to computer A (NIC N2), and yet another Network card for PC B (NIC N3). To connect N2 to N3 you will need to get a crimped "cross-over" cable (a few bucks) from your dealer. You should now be set in terms of the hardware. PC A becomes the gateway/server while PC B is just a client.

Once you have the two PCs connected with the cable, you'll need to set up Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) - assuming you have Windows 2000 and above, or IP Masquerading if you are a Linux user.

You might also want to try buying a switch (~Rs.1500) or maybe even go wireless (also pretty cheap) :)

The Motorola SB5100i which you very likely also have, comes with both an Ethernet socket and a USB socket. You can (according to the manual) connect each PC to one of these sockets and connect to the Internet. I'm not sure how the IP addressing will work though. Check the Hathway page for links..

Lemme know how you go :)
