Cisco's Visual Networking Index for 2012–2017 forecasts usage and growth in Internet traffic in the next five years. Besides the expected excitement on mobile and video growth and Internet penetration, the paper and presentation offer per-country statistic which are quite telling.
Global broadband speeds:
Globally, the average broadband speed will grow 3.5-fold from 2012 to 2017, from 11.3 Mbps to 39 Mbps.
Globally, 83% of broadband connections will be faster than 5 Mbps in 2017, up from 53% today.
Globally, 55% of broadband connections will be faster than 10 Mbps in 2017, up from 35% today.
Globally, 11.0% of broadband connections will be faster than 50 Mbps in 2017, up from 6.3% today.
Globally, the average mobile connection speed will grow 7-fold from 2012 to 2017, reaching 3,898 kbps in 2017.
Indian broadband speeds:
In India, the average broadband speed will grow 3.5-fold from 2012 to 2017, from 1.9 Mbps to 7 Mbps.
In India, 19% of broadband connections will be faster than 5 Mbps in 2017, up from 12% today.
In India, 8% of broadband connections will be faster than 10 Mbps in 2017, up from 5% today.
In India, 0.5% of broadband connections will be faster than 50 Mbps in 2017, up from .3% today.
In India, the average mobile connection speed will grow 25-fold from 2012 to 2017, reaching 2,462 kbps in 2017.
In other words, average global broadband speeds are close to six times faster than in India. China's average, at 7.1 Mbps, is close to four times better than India. Coincidentally, China's 564M net users is also four times the size of India's 138M users.
