Tech heavyweights explain how to destroy the Internet

The Register has a story on the difficulties faced by leading Internet professionals and scientists, trying to explain the fundamental nature of the Internet to non-technically oriented government legislators and administrators.

A group of tech celebs gathered on Capitol Hill this week to brief Congressional aides on how Congress and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) can, and probably will, make a complete mess of the Internet in about a year's time.

AOL sets up shop in India as well

The Economic Times has a story on AOL's new development centre in Bangalore.

The world's leading Internet company, which lost 2 million dial-up subscribers in the last two years and laid off hundreds of software developers in Silicon Valley three months ago, advertised in Indian newspapers seeking software developers with varying experience.

The company official did not make a link between AOL's troubles in the United States and its decision to move work to India.

Yeah, right :S

BITS Pilani is India's most-wired

The Economic Times has a story on BITS' recent campus makeover.

A gigabit backbone of the network, christened Neuron, provides broadband access, IP telephony, streaming media and video conferencing facilities in student rooms, hostels, staff quarters and guesthouse, besides wireless access in the campus.

Neuron has wired up all areas of the campus. More than 25 km of cables, 4000 voice grad 10/100 access points, 220 networking switches and 150Km of CAT 5 structured cabling.

Google to offer gigabyte of free e-mail

Google is now offering a free email service named GMail. With free storage of upto 1GB, this dwarfs similar offerings from other webmail sites such as Hotmail (2 MB) and Yahoo (4 MB).

Perfect for your neighbourhood warez-dude and porn-pimp :S Let's hope this is not an April Fool's hoax, cuz I'd sure as hell like a graphic free email a/c - The 1 GB is just a bonus :)

Toonz India to launch a new series on Hanuman

The Econmic Times has a story on Toonz India's announcement on a new animated series on Hanumaan. A 2 minute short of Hanuman won the best animated feature award at the Ficci Frames awards this year.

Toonz is the company behind Cartoon Network's Tenali Raman. Cartoon network has pre-bought the series :) Let's just hope that they choose better voice artists this time..

Bharti to invest $40 mn on undersea cable

Rediff reports that Bharti Televentures has signed an agreement to join the South East Asia-Middle East-Western Europe-4 (SEA-ME-WE-4) consortium along with 15 global telecom operators to develop and own the next generation undersea cable system. Bharti is investing USD 40 million in the project estimated to cost USD 500 million.

This is among a list of many operators who have recently invested in bandwidth upgrades - Reliance et. al. Let's hope that we get to realise the fruits of their labour soon :)

3rd space tourist scheduled for next year

The Register amongst others, is carrying a story on American millionaire Greg Olson's trip to space in 12 months time. After fellow American Dennis Tito and South African Mark Shuttleworth, Olson will be Space Adventures' 3rd space tourist. However, he isn't just going to gawk outside his window, or admire the novelty of the space toilet:

Olsen intends to carry out experiments on behalf of his own Sensors Unlimited: some involving infrared cameras and others concerning crystal growth.

The novelty doesn't seem to have worn out yet, with the price tag remaining about the same. The 8-day trip is going to set him back about USD 20 Million, which is similar to the amount paid by his predecessors.

The cable vs. DTH wars begin

ZDNet India has an amusing story on the beginnings of friction between cable operators and DTH (which kicked off recently) companies, and on the lack of policing which has resulted in pornography (amongst other things) being transmitted all across north and western India!

27 Indian firms on Forbes list of 2000 top firms

The Hindu notes that 27 Indian companies have made it into the Forbes 2000 - a list of the the 2000 largest firms in the world. Infosys and Wipro are the only IT companies in the list while the rest are populated by banks and energy conglomerates. The complete article is available here.
