Sify Broadband

Submitted by Moulee on 10 December, 2005 - 08:20

I have used sify from the dial-up days and used broadband for about 8 months. In the start they did not have wide range of service plans. They even offered 48kbps for 450/m unlimited.(am still confused how they call it BB :-??).Recently they stopped providing 48kbps(converted it to 64kb).I consider sify to be cheaper than anyother BB services in delhi/chennai. Now they are offering 256kpbs, 895/m unlimited. But the d/l is limited to 150MB per day(how do they call it unlimited!!!???). If it exceeds 150mb...one day from the validity is reduced. The speed always sticks around 256(Whereas hathway does not reach the said speed).
The advantage in SBB(Sify broadband) is that it does not requires a modem to connect, but the LAN wires used to connect is worst i have ever seen. It gets cut atleast 2 - 3 times in a month. And it takes atleast 2 days for them to repair. As SBB is leased to the local cable operator(LCO), we have to be depend on them. Even if u contact the CC the only answer u get is...contact ur LCO(except tech. and renewal related questions).
Recently when shifted to chennai...i contacted the CC for a new connection. They said that their executive will contact me within 24hrs. But i had to wait for 1 week. I thought that atleast the connection would be givin within 2 days. But they said it would take another 7 days(It just took me 1 hr to get a connection in delhi) Later i came to know that i am the only SBB user in the area. So i dropped the plan of getting SBB as they said they have to lay cable direct from their office which is about 2kms frm my house(Meanwhile i got Hathway)
There are different kind of reaction from ppl who used SBB. Personally i had no tough problems with sify.

Forums:

Yep, Sify don't really have the best rep. in the market. You're the first person I've heard who is actually happy with the bandwidth allocated. If you're still the only person in your area with Sify, that would be the reason why :/ Things will very likely not be as rosy as soon as you're forced to share the bandwidth with other users.

Cheers

As far as i used in delhi the bandwidth was good. i didnt face any problem except rare occassions. Since they said am the only person 2 get SBB in my area i dropped the idea of getting it. I subscribed for hathway :)

Ah :) Either way, as I said before, you're the first person I've heard actually complimenting their speeds :) Searching for Sify broadband on Google will generally indicate the degree of discontent among the Sify crowd, and everybody is always baying for blood :P

Reliable studies (not!) confirm this: Googlefight!

Its always easy to find ppl complaining. Check the links u gave, its 'which sucks vs which' so ppl who had bad experience might hav voted. And compared to other BB, sify is oldest(as far as i know) and surely it will have more users than others and it may b one of the reasons for more -ve voters.(For ur kind info hathway is available only in 8 cities:p,and even dataone/airtel is not availabe thru'out))

Karthik was kidding - lighten up. Note the prominent (not!) in his post. And for the record, Sify sucks! Now this page is going to be added to that list as well haha

Din.

Moulee, I was just kidding :) But you're right, there is nothing conclusive or reliable about those comparisons. But there might be a large grain of truth hidden in there.

Anyways, to clarify your assumptions:

  • These aren't "voted" links. These are links returned by google for the specified string. I.e it compares the number of results for each specified string. Nothing else. While it is definitely not conclusive, it can be entertaining at times :)
  • Sify is not the oldest broadband (or any other) ISP around. That would be VSNL. However, Sify was the first private ISP to offer dial-up services post deregulation.
  • Sify is not available everywhere either. BSNL has a far larger coverage area.
  • Hathway is available in 9 cities :-P

Sify have a history of poor service [which I had the displeasure of receiving a few years back] and misrepresentative [as you've noted yourself] marketing. But they do appear to be getting better thanks primarily to the competitive nature of the current market.

That said, IMNSHO unreliable franchise business models [involving your local cable-karan] used by the likes of Sify and Net4 are doomed to always/eventually be unsatisfactory.

Just my 0.05p :)
