Outlook India Spam

"Outlook Traveller Incredible Sri Lanka Offer"

Thus stated the subject line of an e-mail I received at 2:30 a.m this morning. :S I receive this missive all because I signed up on their website a few months ago to view an article. Nowhere did it state then (and I tend to notice these little man-traps), and nowhere does it state now - on the registration form - that signing up to India's premier magazine would also make me eligible for an *Incredible Getaway* to our war ravaged neighbour. But nevertheless, here I am thanks to the wonders of Outlook's groundbreaking opt-out marketing strategy.

Site stasis

Submitted by Karthik on 4 February, 2006 - 21:36

Why the dearth of new stories in the last couple of weeks? Too much work and too little time. I have however, spent some time in the last week developing some new stuff for when Drupal 4.7 comes out. I will very likely upgrade quillem.com as soon as it hits RC status :)

.be?

Submitted by Karthik on 4 February, 2006 - 21:31

I've been noticing a number of Indians who use a .be domain for their personal sites - what is up with that?! Bulk discount? :S

And no, they aren't domains in the same vein as del.icio.us either.

Defective Yeti

This is a classic - hilarious and true, especially if you've played text adventure games or been hooked onto MUDs ...

The rest of Defective Yeti is also worth the browse - some gems there :)

Raymond E. Feist - Flight of the Nighthawks

Submitted by Karthik on 28 January, 2006 - 12:28

I just finished reading Raymond E. Feist's last released novel - Flight of the Nighthawks. While his writing style usually leaves a lot to be desired, he's outdone himself this time. This book is pure unadulterated drivel with a weak plot, dialogue that will not look out of place in a 7th standard composition and a hopitty-skipitty-jumpitty flow that tests the limits of your endurance.

Very miss-able unless you are a die hard fan.

The worst tech column ever aka why you don't want to buy a Zenith PC

Submitted by Karthik on 12 January, 2006 - 21:04

I just came across this column, apparently by Raj Saraf - the Big Kahuna of Zenith Computers, and to put it mildly, it hasn't exactly inspired me with boundless confidence in the competence of the company. In fact, a google suggests that this is actually a regular debacle. Furthermore, a quick perusal through some of the past editions indicates that the quality of the "advice" being distributed with this .. wild weekly abandon, always manages to plumb new depths in ignorance. In other words, this is not a one-off.
