Hi K,

My daughter is studying in 2nd year BE (Civil Engineering). What course she can take up in Computer in addition to Autocad. She wants to join computer course which will be useful for her career.

Your advice is welcomed in this regard.

Forums:

AutoCAD will be pretty useful in her current line of study - civil. Is this what she wants to continue after her bachelor's?

I suggest that you find out what career she wants first, and then decide on what she should study. In other words, she should study what she likes, and not be asked to like what she studies :)

Just a thought.
Thanks
Din

Dear Din,

Firstly, she would like to know what are the options. Then she will select. She is planning to do MBA too. But before choosing, she would like to know what are the options. I have given her full freedom in selecting any course. Whether software companies will recruit civil engineers too? In this case, what course she can opt? Ofcourse, structural will have good demand in civil. Any how, please give me your advice. Thanks. Rao

If she's trying to get into programming, then she should probably do her NIIT/whatever courses along with all the million other students out there.

Also, the last few years have seen increasing importance being given to certifications (alá SCJP, MCSE and the like) as they generally allow the candidate to get their foot in the door a little more easily. However, the actual practical use of some of these certificates is questionable..

As Dinesh said, she should decide what she wants to get into and then pick and choose what she can do to improve in that line.

Hope that helped :)
