For general broadband discussions

Hey,

If you'd like to help out and recommend ISPs for inclusion in the global comparison page, please add a reply below with the following details:

  • Country name
  • ISP name
  • ISP homepage URL
  • ISP plan page URL

Please feel free to submit more than one ISP for a country. I will eventually only be including one of them on the page, but it allows for greater reliability.

Also, please make sure that the ISPs being submitted meet the criteria specified on the global comparison page.

Well, I think there are at least two movies deserving this title. These are Terminator 4 and Transformers 2. What do you think?

P.S. To moderators: sorry for possible writing to a wrong category but I didn't find any other category for general chat.

A columnist, Prashant Rao, for the Indian Express expresses his frustration at the broadband scene in India.

So what is preventing broadband from getting into single, forget double, digits? The answer my friend is blowing in the wind, heck, it’s shouting in a gale of indifference on part of ISPs.

I'd like to take this opportunity to publicly expose the racket that in2Cable are running.

They have horrible connection speeds, horrible line quality, inconsistent service and highly incompetent people in charge. I have done extensive benchmarking over months and found that they are providing around 30% uptime, and 60% connection speeds of what they advertise.

They are consistently 2 to 4 times more expensive than others. e.g. 64kbps,unlimited at 1010. Airtel and BSNL 256 kbps unlimited are similarly priced

They have the worst and most heavy handed billing mechanism which inadvertently results in 3-4 days a month without an internet connection.

I should have been a member earlier here :D Rest assured, you can see me around here more often.

We are currently running a thread to make the media aware of the BB hassles.
broadband forums is the current thread that's running.

You can contact the concerned person, Mr Nag:
Mr Nag's mail id is:
narendra.nag(at)tv18online.com
His mobile number is 00 91 98996 92269

He wants to do stories from across India. It means that you can file in your stories to him directly on his email; which would be edited for clarity or relate your experiences with pathetic broadband access. Your ISP doesn't matter. Whether it's dial up or cable or DSL.

Didn't think that this was good enough for a story, but reliance webworlds (all over the country I think), are going to be training newbies on how to use the Internet and online gaming (lol! yeah let's get them hooked) for free.

This unique workshop comprises 30-minutes of one-to-one tutorial on day one, either on surfing or on gaming, depending on what the user opts for. Day two and three will include 30 minutes of practical and one-hour of Internet/Gaming usage.

The customer will also be handed a list of broadband website URL's across various popular categories, which include sports, music, movies, e-shoppping among others and a ready- reckoner on how to use the Internet -- 10 easy steps.

Hi to everyone on these forums! I am looking for a new ISP for when my current subscription with Exatt Technologies expires in Jan. Since I play on-line multiplayer games frequently, I am interested in low latency. In fact for gaming even a 128 kbps connection would work fine if you had really good low pings to the game servers.

I presently subscribe to Exatt's 512kbps plan. The have a 60GB per annum cap, which is quite reasonable.

What I would like to know is everyone's views on which ISP provides the best low latency service. To get a representative idea, I would appreciate if members do 5 ping tests to the following sites and posts their results in the format I have created below. Please list the average result of the 5 "AVERAGE" times you achieve. Please also post how many times (TOTAL) a packet was lost out of the 20 packets that would be sent to each site. That way we would get an idea of how the various ISPs compare to one another not only in latency but also in quality of service. The sites are listed below.

From the article:

ADSL technology offers the convenience of simultaneous use of phone and Internet surfing at very high speeds. Often, the users encounter an annoying disturbance on phones connected in parallel because of the high frequency of ADSL signal. This splitter filters out ADSL’s high frequency signal and allows disturbance free use of cordless phones, fax machines and phone instruments on parallel lines at homes and offices.
