Word of the Day: Dhoni

Submitted by Karthik on 30 November, 2006 - 01:27

My delicious feed brought to attention (what I eventually found out was) a simple scriptaculous (yes, two of these buggers on the same line) gallery script named Dhonishow. I was (understandably) curious as to what this was, (and wtf was it doing on a .de domain) especially considering the fact that Dhoni has failed yet again (he got out earlier tonight slicing to third man :/).

Ah (the joys of parantheses :P).

Anyways, dhonishow.de informs me that a Dhoni is not just a word (and now a meme) that signifies an overly hirsute, milk guzzling, inconsistent cricketer. Instead, it refers to:

Winamp & m4a

Submitted by Karthik on 29 November, 2006 - 14:59

My previous post on playing m4a files using Winamp is no longer useful as the 3ivx plug-in expires after a while. Therefore, please use the following solution:

  • Uninstall 3ivx if you have it installed from my previous post.
  • Visit Rarewares and download the MP4 Input Plugin for Winamp.
  • Unzip the file (in_mp4.zip) and move the resulting in_mp4.dll file to your Winamp plug-ins folder, which commonly resides at C:\Program Files\Winamp\Plugins.

Quadrimonthly / Tetramonthly / Triannual

Submitted by Karthik on 11 June, 2006 - 21:11

There's monthly, bimonthly and quarterly.. So what's the word to indicate "every four months"? Apparently, nobody knows.. but the choices were Tetramonthly (which sounds horrible), triannual (which indicates three years rather than a third of a year.. i.e, it's the same as triennial) and lastly, quadrimonthly, which, atleast to yours truly, makes the most sense. Moreover, if Big Blue can use it, so can Quillem :)

Desktop Zen - Reducing Visual Clutter on your Desktop

Jeroen, this one is for you :P

I'm one of those paranoid "empty-trash-every-5_minutes/arrange-icons-by-type-every-5_minutes" freaks and funnily enough, I've never actually noticed the "Show desktop items" option :o Anyways, the Orion Nebula is now viewable in all its glory on my desktop.

Speeding up the locale module

Submitted by Karthik on 23 April, 2006 - 18:26

Another patch that didn't get into 4.7 was a simple (yet important) one that created an index for the locale database. The locale module can suck you dry in terms of DB calls, so this can provide a huge boost for a site using it. The index is added on a BLOB field named 'source' with a length of 30-40 (AFAIK, this number was just picked at random).
