Defective Yeti

Submitted by Karthik on 28 January, 2006 - 13:05

This is a classic - hilarious and true, especially if you've played text adventure games or been hooked onto MUDs ...

The rest of Defective Yeti is also worth the browse - some gems there :)

Raymond E. Feist - Flight of the Nighthawks

Submitted by Karthik on 28 January, 2006 - 12:28

I just finished reading Raymond E. Feist's last released novel - Flight of the Nighthawks. While his writing style usually leaves a lot to be desired, he's outdone himself this time. This book is pure unadulterated drivel with a weak plot, dialogue that will not look out of place in a 7th standard composition and a hopitty-skipitty-jumpitty flow that tests the limits of your endurance.

Very miss-able unless you are a die hard fan.

The worst tech column ever aka why you don't want to buy a Zenith PC

Submitted by Karthik on 12 January, 2006 - 21:04

I just came across this column, apparently by Raj Saraf - the Big Kahuna of Zenith Computers, and to put it mildly, it hasn't exactly inspired me with boundless confidence in the competence of the company. In fact, a google suggests that this is actually a regular debacle. Furthermore, a quick perusal through some of the past editions indicates that the quality of the "advice" being distributed with this .. wild weekly abandon, always manages to plumb new depths in ignorance. In other words, this is not a one-off.

Flash and JAWS/Accessibility

Submitted by Karthik on 9 December, 2005 - 19:02

Getting Flash to be MSAA accessible is a chore in itself. And if you are converting a poorly written app to be accessible, welcome to hell :/

For my own reference, and due to the lack of any practical documentation on the net, here are a few things to keep in mind. Also, these were primarily tested with JAWS, a popular MSAA compliant screen reader. I'm just extemporising here, so feel free to correct any errors or recommend stuff I've left out (by adding a comment) and I'll edit it in..

India Grows at 8% in recent Qtr --means Telecom as an enabler will grow FASTER ..

Barreling on

Business Standard / New Delhi December 01, 2005

The economy continues to outpace forecasters, none of whom predicted either the 8.1 per cent GDP growth achieved in the first quarter, nor the 8 per cent now reported by the Central Statistical Organisation for the second (July-September) quarter. It is now more or less certain that growth in the full financial year will exceed the Reserve Bank’s upper limit forecast of 7.5 per cent. If achieved, that will take average growth in the 2003-06 period to 7.6 per cent, matching the record of 1994-97, but recorded this time with moderate inflation and without macro-economic imbalances other than the growing current account deficit (for which, blame oil). These “advance estimates” of quarterly GDP, released a month earlier than the usual schedule, must have been available to the Prime Minister ahead of public release, making him bold enough to hold out the prospect of 10 per cent growth at the World Economic Forum’s annual event in Delhi a day earlier.

Rain, Pizza and Hypocrisy

Submitted by Karthik on 2 December, 2005 - 21:00

The scene: It's half past eight in Chennai. It's been raining all day. Roads are flooded to an extent but traffic is still chugging along fine.

The need: Pizza to warm my innards.

M.O: I check the net and find the numbers for Pizza Hut and Domino's.

Pizza Hut's lines are busy, while Domino's answers. So I think to myself that this is a good time to put their "20 minutes nahin tho free" promise to the test. So, my interest is piqued [this incidentally is my first call to Domino's or any other pizza joint in India] and I start messing on my phone for something akin to a countdown timer.
